Jeremy Aspinall

Boosted by an Oscar win for BlacKkKlansman, Spike Lee goes from strength to strength with this fascinating adventure about four Black veterans returning to Vietnam to retrieve the remains of their fallen comrade (played by Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman). The ever-spiky director mines the African-American experience of the conflict, bookending the film with the words of Muhammad Ali and Martin Luther King. However, Lee's band of brothers is also on a mission to recover a fortune in gold, taking the plot into Treasure of the Sierra Madre territory, where greed, paranoia and painful truths bubble to the surface with explosive effect. The film's epic length could be off-putting, yet Lee's inspired direction and adept weaving of fact and fiction, allied to a gorgeous selection of Marvin Gaye standards, more than compensates. The cast is terrific, but it's Delroy Lindo who gives the powerhouse performance as the irascible, volatile vet still haunted by the death of the group's messianic leader. Released on Netflix in the wake of the George Floyd killing, it couldn't be more timely.
